Deciding on the right yoga teacher training program is a big decision. It is important to research what style of yoga is taught, what areas of study are covered as well as what sort of certification is awarded at the end of the program. Taking time to research these things will ensure that the training fits the needs of the person taking the training.

What Style of Yoga to Study

Vinyasa, Hatha, Kundalini, Ashtanga, Iyengar and many other styles of yoga all have different training programs, so it is important to practice a few different kinds and see what is a good fit. Some yoga studios also require going through their teacher training program to be eligible to teach at their studio. Programs for various yoga styles vary in length from a few months to a few years and the costs can range from $1500 to upwards of $3000.

Once a style has been chosen, if at all possible it is important to practice with the teachers that will be teaching the training. Lots of time will be spent practicing and studying and it is important to find a style of yoga that is a good fit. Certain trainings and styles have requirements that must be met before registering for a yoga teacher training program, such as a certain number of years of practice or the flexibility and strength to practice certain poses.

Areas of Study in Yoga

In addition to practicing and learning about yoga poses, expect to spend a good deal of time studying anatomy, alignment and philosophy. Different schools will break these up in different ways and a more in depth teacher training will have additional areas of study. There will also be time to practice teach with other people in the program and get feedback.

Set aside at least a few hours per week for reading and assignments outside of class. Most programs have homework and expect each student to be prepared for discussion on various topics. There may be some written work as well, anatomy worksheets or short essays on various topics including the yoga sutras, how to work with a student who is injured and the history of yoga.

Becoming a Registered Yoga Teacher Through Yoga Alliance

Yoga Alliance is the national education organization for yoga teachers and studios in the United States. Graduates of a Yoga Alliance registered school have completed a required amount of anatomy and philosophy training, as well as had time to practice teach throughout the teacher training program. Most employers recognize this as being qualified to teach yoga.

Before committing to a yoga teacher training program look into what style of yoga, what areas of study and what kind of certification will be received once successfully completing the program. Different schools have different requirements and have different things to offer. Finding a school that is a good match will ensure a pleasurable learning experience for everyone involved.
